Close ups are usually used in films on the actors and actresses to show expressions or reactions to things that may have happened in the film that you may have not been able to see if it was any other type of shot.
Extreme close ups are used to either show the importance of something or to zone in a point or action for example you can have extreme close up on the eye to show a tear or on the mouth to show a smile or the timer on a bomb to show its importance.
Medium shots are also used to show facial expressions but more often the not they are used to show body language in characters.
Long shots are used to establish surroundings. For example if a character wakes up in unfamiliar surroundings the camera may switch to a long shot to establish their surroundings.
